What is Prana? Elevate your yoga practice with Proper Breathing

It is more than just “ENERGY”, Let’s unpack it together …..
PRANA – THE GIVER OF LIFE : Prana is not the breath and it is not Oxygen, It is also not something Mystical, It moves through you and animates your body. It is the intelligence that supports all life.
To understand how Prana moves, we need to explore the Prana vayus or “winds of Prana” which illustrate how energy moves through the body. The pancha vayus are not mystical forces, they directly govern digestion , circulation, an even how we express ourselves in the world. Mastering these vital energies means mastering your Yoga and your Life

  • PRANA VAYU – INWARD (Inhaling, receiving, nourishment)
  • APANA VAYU – DOWN & OUT (Exhaling, Excretion, Releasing)
  • SAMANA VAYU – CENTERING (Digestion, Integration, Balance)
  • VYANA VAYU – EXPANSION (Circulation, Movement, Adaptability)
  • UDAYA VAYU – UP & OUT (Expression, Transformation, Growth)

Each of the vayus directly affects your physical and mental state – they are the energetic forces behind everything you do. In yoga, we learn to direct and harmonize these energies through practice. If your prana is scattered, so is your mind. If it is flowing effortlessly and harmoniously, you feel clear, strong and vibrant.

How to work with Prana ?

1. Want more energy ? - Focus on deep, controlled inhales and backbending (Prana Vayu)

2. Need to let go? Focus on long, complete exhales and forward folds (Apana Vayu)

3. Feeling unbalanced? Use equal ratio breathing and twists to ignite digestion (Samana Vayu)

4. Feeling Stagnant? Move dynamically to promote circulation and focus on lateral bends (Vyana Vayu)

5. Time to express yourself ? Chanting and inversions accelerate transformation (Udana Vayu)

The key is to learn to direct your Prana :- Prana follows attention. So, where are you placing focus? On the mat , try techniques such as Ujjayi or Kapalabhati to deepen your connection to the present moment. Off the mat, let your breath be your secret weapon – bringing you calm in the most stressful moments.
